Karen Sloan, VP of Education


Karen moved to Port Washington 23 years ago, and immediately joined Tthe Community Synagogue. They have two daughters, her  youngest attended the ECC which afforded them an opportunity to feel like part of a community right away.

She has been an active volunteer in Port Washington for many years, serving on the PTA and Parent Council and running for the Board of Education 12 years ago. She will be retiring from the BOE on June 30 after serving as president for the last ten years. She has also co-chaired the Safety and Substance Abuse Task Force for the past ten years and was a member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee for the past seven years – both of which she will continue with after leaving the BOE.  Karen has been an active member of the local Hadassah chapter for over 20 years, serving on the board and running many events, most notably fundraising for breast and ovarian cancer research. She has been a member of the board of The Ed. Foundation for over ten years, although she stepped off two years ago, she will be returning there this summer. She also serves as a trustee on the board of a private foundation in Israel, The Mildred and Sidney Edelstein Foundation, that donates money to many places, but most of which is involved with Hebrew University.
