Statement on Mass Shooting in Parkland, Florida
With so many others in the nation, we mourn the senseless loss of life at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida yesterday. We pray for healing for those who were injured and comfort for the families of those who were murdered. For those seeking the words to say to their own children or grandchildren please look here.
We are aware that a number of congregants or their loved ones had some connection to the shooting. If you - or someone you know - is in need of counsel, please know that we are always available to you for spiritual and emotional support.
We cry out with the words of the Psalmist, who raged against the pain in the world, "How long, O Eternal One?" Our anguish is not, however, only directed to God. It is to our political leaders who have not found the will to end this scourge of violence in our land. Yes, there is a need to address the issue of mental health and caring for those who are ill. We will find no resolution to the ongoing problem of mass murders in our nation, however, without also finding a common sense approach towards gun control (both the kinds of weapons and the ability to attain them). If you are interested in a way to help, you may wish to get involved with Do Not Stand Idly By.
Let us offer our prayers, but also offer our hands and hearts to seek a more peaceful land.
