Former ECC Student Pays it Forward in a Big Way

For almost 20 years, Kate and Jonathan Hirsch have been actively involved in The Community Synagogue. Their children, Karl and Hannah, have grown up at the synagogue from the ECC to Religious School to POWTY, the synagogue's youth group. Kate is currently on The Community Synagogue's Board of Trustees.

In 2005, Karl Hirsch attended the ECC. Fifteen years later, he returned to his former preschool with a very big idea. He was working towards becoming an Eagle Scout and wanted to do his project at the ECC, where his schooling began.

Over the course of a year, Karl, a member of Troop Number 7, attended meetings with his advisor, the Community Synagogue Executive Director, the ECC Director and Assistant Director, teachers, and parents on the Outdoor Classroom Committee. Karl's idea was to beautify the Pardes, the outdoor classroom area. He wanted to clear out the overgrowth, build 9 planting boxes (one for each class), and install an outdoor book house.

On November 1, Karl's idea became a reality. With the help of over 20 volunteers including members of the clergy, parents, students, administrators and teachers, Karl and his team transformed the existing area. When people arrived at the ECC the following day, they were speechless.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. The before and after photos below say it all.

Karl, on behalf of everyone at The Community Synagogue and the ECC, we offer a big "Thank you!"
