Summary |
Our hearts go out to all those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Many of you receiving this note recall all too well how difficult it was during the days and weeks after Superstorm Sandy. For many in Texas and Louisiana the situation will be similar, if not much worse.
If you are looking for a way to help here are some suggestions for where you can offer support:
NECHAMA
Our congregation's tzedakah recipient for September to November, this Jewish volunteer organization provides natural disaster preparedness, response, and recovery services nationwide. They train, equip, and lead volunteers that assist disaster survivors in the spirit of goodwill and creating mutual respect among all people. To offer funds or find out about "hands on" efforts to help visit nechama.org. Coins and bills placed in the tzedakah box in the front lobby through Thanksgiving weekend will be sent to this organization.
RED CROSS
The American Red Cross is working around the clock to provide safe shelter and comfort for the hundreds of thousands of people impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
UJA-FEDERATION OF NEW YORK
Through the UJA-Federation network of nonprofits, quick and effective response can be given to those in need with urgently needed basics, like food and medicine, and with long-term needs, like shelter and trauma counseling. 100% of funds will be used to help individuals and communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. Support their efforts here.
GLOBALGIVING
This crowdfunding site has launched a hurricane relief fund aimed at gathering funds for local nonprofits in the storm-stricken region.
DONATE BLOOD
Blood centers expect a supply shortage because of the closure of some blood banks along the Texas coast and the likely demand stemming from injuries sustained in the storm. You can search online for blood drives local to you or book an appointment via the Red Cross website.
May those offering help for those in need and those suffering be kept from all harm.
