Special Trips
Grade 8 & 9 Retreat
Each year, our 8th & 9th grade students have the opportunity to take part in a great and special weekend away. This year, on March 16-18, 2012, we will head to Camp Eisner for a unique Shabbat experience. We gather together as a community to celebrate Shabbat through creative worship, for special programs and for our meals. There will also be plenty of free time for socializing and building new relationships. Our retreat has always been a hit, and we look forward to having many students join our educator and clergy this year.

L’Taken Trip for Grades 10 & 11
Ever other year, we offer a special trip for our 10th & 11th grade students in Washington DC with Rabbi Z and Shari Isserles. We join the Reform movement’s Religious Action Center L’Taken Seminar. This exciting weekend will enable students to hear from experts both inside and outside of the Jewish community on social justice and political action. We will tour the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, participate in havdalah services at one of the memorials and sample the vibrancy of Georgetown and other exciting areas of Washington DC. After learning about our political system and issues which impact the Jewish community, our trip culminates with the students’ opportunity to lobby on Capitol Hill on Monday.
This trip will be offered during the 2012-2013 school year.

Students will learn about the struggles of African Americans to gain equality in the 1950s & 60s as well as discover how Jews were involved in Civil Rights struggle. We will also delve into the creation of rock and roll and how this helped break down the walls of segregation. The students will walk away understanding why Jews, as a people who have known oppression, must care and act when others are oppressed.
